If it hadn’t been for a person who abandoned it at the South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, this hairless possum would have died tragically (SPWRC). Peach, a little possum, has an uncommon health issue called alopecia, which causes her to lose all of her hair.
Peach would not have survived the harsh winter since the body coat of hair is essential for controlling the temperature of this species of marsupial.
The marsupial was discovered in SW Lubbock, Texas, United States, and the man realized he had to save her right away.
When the man left a box in front of the rehabilitation center’s admissions building, Gail Barnes, executive director of SPWRC, watched it through cameras.
When they opened the box to see what it was, they were shocked to discover a hairless hand peering out, and they mistook it for a cat.
They discovered it was a 3 to 4 month old possum and quickly placed it in an incubator for recuperation.
Peach’s plight was explained in a Facebook post by the rehab clinic, who stated that owing to her health, she would not be able to live in the wild. They asked for winter garments so Peach could be warm in the cold, and people generously supplied.
Many internet users with hairless cats have donated clothing, while some are crocheting sweaters just for Peach.
Peach is doing well and, because to the extra attention, has been able to quadruple her weight in this period.
She wears knitted sweaters that have been donated to her every day, and the treatment facility keeps track of her new clothes.
Little is known about its destiny, but one thing is certain: it will not be able to return to its original environment.
Peach will become a “ambassador for education,” according to the rehab center’s executive director, who hopes to visit the schools with the possum once they open.
The goal is to teach pupils about these group of marsupials so that they are familiar with its primary characteristics.
