Gallo Is An Exemplary Father Who Takes Care Of His Chicks Who Lost Their Mother

After his chicks’ mother died, this rooster has been a model parent and has taken his responsibility extremely seriously. Dan Oostenbrink, whose family raises a small flock of pet hens, was awakened one early morning by squawking outside his Chilliwack, Canada, house.

He hurried outside as soon as he realized something wasn’t right to investigate.

Dan stated to The Dodo:

«I witnessed a large eagle swoop down and capture our hen. We were all really devoted to the bird, so it was tragic.

However, the hen had ties to more people than just the family. Six chicks that had just been born by her and the rooster lost their mother in an instant. Since they could only keep each other warm, they need the hen’s attention and protection.

Unsure of what to do, the family decided to wait and see whether the chicks could survive on their own. The following day, a remarkable event took place.

The chicks started to follow the rooster, who up until that point had showed little interest in them, as they sought the direction their mother had provided them. But something altered that evening.

Dan stated:

“Daddy, the chicks are all under the rooster now,” my kid informed me. We were completely taken aback by that. He held them behind his wings while he panted.

It goes without saying that roosters do not act as parents and rarely interact with their offspring directly, but after observing the helpless infants’ desperate need for their mother, the rooster made the decision to assume his parental duties and provide his offspring with the love, care, and protection they required.

Dan stated:

“He became interested at once. He started looking for insects to put in front of the chicks as food. He guides them to the water, guards them, and provides them with a place to stay. He has moved from where he usually sleeps so that he may cover the chicks at night with his body. A rooster has never before acted that way, like a hen. It’s quite incredible.
