Deaf Shelter Dog Has Been Waiting 3 Years For Someone To Notice Her And Finally She Can’t Believe What Big Surprise Is Waiting For Her

Bella is a 6-year-old bulldog mix with a lovely underbite who adores humans. But she’s lived in a shelter for more than half her life, and no one understands why.

Bella was picked up as a stray three years ago and ended up at the Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Bella appeared to be just like any other dog at the shelter at first, but the staff soon discovered she was deaf.

“She doesn’t act deaf,” said Lacie Heritage, an animal placement coordinator at the Animal Welfare League of Queen Anne’s County, where Bella is being housed. “With a hand signal, she can accomplish just about anything.” She is quite familiar with the words’sit,’ ‘down,’ and’stay.’ She adores humans and is continuously gazing in your direction. So she keeps an eye out for your signals to see how she’s doing.”

PAWS ran into some issues last year. When the town flooded, the shelter overflowed as well – this time with homeless dogs and cats, not with water. PAWS employees contacted other shelters to see if they could take any of their animals.

“Bella was their longest-serving resident,” Heritage explained. “We accepted her because we thought she was adorable and gentle, and we figured she’d be adopted immediately.”

Regrettably, this was not the case. Bella may have transferred to a new shelter, but she remained in the same predicament as before: she was living in a kennel rather than a home.

Bella’s poor luck might be related to her barking, according to Heritage.

“She barks when people come by her cage, which deters them a little and they simply walk right by her,” Heritage explained. “We think it’s because she’s deaf and doesn’t understand what’s happening.”

Bella, on the other hand, is an entirely different person once she’s out of her cage.

“She’ll just adore you,” Heritage predicted. “It makes no difference who you are or if you’ve met her previously. She will be your best buddy if you give her a treat and pet her. She’s the loveliest girl on the face of the planet.”

Bella enjoys going for walks, doing “zoomies” around the play yard, and licking peanut butter off a Kong, among other things.

Bella would perform best in a household where she is the only dog, according to Heritage. She also need a caretaker who is willing to devote time to her.

“She’s received interest a couple times,” Heritage said, “but it’s just finding the perfect person and making sure they want to cope with having a deaf dog.” “They have to do the work and keep doing hand signals and other things, and they typically don’t have the extra time to spend with her.”
