Few marineThat link references coverage of sightings of Migaloo, the famous all-white humpback whale frequently documented migrating along the eastern coast of Australia.

Key Facts About Migaloo
Identity: Migaloo (an Australian Indigenous word meaning "white fella") is an adult male humpback whale, first photographed off Byron Bay, New South Wales, in 1991\. At the time, he was the only documented all-white humpback in the world.

Genetics: Genetic analysis confirmed he is a true albino male carrying a gene mutation that prevents melanin production, rather than simply leucistic.

Migration Route: Like other East Australian humpbacks, he migrates annually from Antarctic feeding grounds up past Sydney, Byron Bay, and the Gold Coast to warm tropical waters near the Great Barrier Reef to breed, returning south between September and November.

Legal Protection: Due to intense media and boat harassment following his discovery, the Australian government declared Migaloo a "whale of special interest." Regulations establish an exclusion zone of 500 meters around him for vessels and aircraft, backed by heavy fines.

Recent Status: Confirmed sightings of Migaloo have become exceedingly rare in recent years. Because humpbacks can live up to 50–80 years, researchers track him via acoustic monitoring (identifying his distinct song) and community sighting reports, though several supposed sightings turn out to be other rare white or hypopigmented whales, such as "Migaloo Jnr" (Bahloo).
