Emotional Reunion: A Blind Dog Recognized His Canine Handler From The Navy After Six Years Thanks To His Smell

In 2010, 29-year-old Oceanside, California resident David Herrera was hired as Kash’s dog handler. When he was just 2 years old, Kash worked as an IED (improvised explosive device) detection dog. Before being deployed to Afghanistan, Herrera and Kash underwent training together in Hartsville, South Carolina. There, they remained as a unit for seven months while clearing the country’s highways of explosives. Herrera’s life, as well as the lives of his 30 other friends, were often rescued by Kash.

In one of the bloodiest places in the world, Sangin, we cleaned up roadside bombs for nearly every day of our seven months together while residing in a truck. He went through those difficult moments, and we even had some IEDs on the vehicle.

Our major responsibility was to check for roadside explosives.

They were split up after their arrival in the country, and Kash was sent to train with a different dog handler.

In his Facebook post, David stated:

“This explosive detection dog saved my life and the lives of numerous marines and sailors throughout the years, and I spent seven months in the war with him. Since I returned from Afghanistan in May 2011, I haven’t seen him. He is now retired, elderly, and half blind, yet when he scented me, he instantly recognized me. Kash N060. I appreciate Kane allowing me to come see you. You were missed, buddy.

David continued:

I’m happy I finally got to meet him again after all this time.
