As People Evacuated Fleeing The Hurricane, This Couple Decided To Stay Home To Face It And Protect 46 Animals

When Hurricane Irma began to approach, Ron and Gretchen Levine’s home became a little bit more crowded. Ron and Gretchen Levine run a pet business in Florida, and they typically only have a few creatures in their care at a time. Ron and Gretchen ended up harboring 46 animals as a result of the decision made by many people to escape rather than stay throughout the hurricane as opposed to taking shelter.

The pair had to go pick up dogs from many residences whose families had been on vacation and were unable to return home due of the storm, and they started collecting animals from families departing on Thursday.

The couple had gathered pets from 23 different households, totaling 46 different creatures, before the hurricane made landfall.

Although it would seem odd to have 46 animals that don’t know each other living together in the same home, things are going really smoothly so far.

As he stated to The Dodo,

We segregate the smaller dogs from the larger ones to ensure that everyone gets along. Both our workplace and a second bedroom serve as cat homes for the cats. The storm was not particularly important to the animals.

The couple lost electricity at their house while Hurricane Irma raged on, but fortunately they were prepared with a generator, so all the food and medication for their visitors was kept safe.
