This Dog’s Family Abandoned Him At A Shelter Because They Were Having A Baby’

A few weeks ago, while using the subway to check her Facebook, Olena Kagui came across a post that horrified her. It featured a picture of Smiley, a pit bull with a dejected expression who had been abandoned in a Brooklyn animal shelter and was on the verge of being put to death if no one came to save him.

Says Olena

“Normally it makes me sad since I can’t help every dog that’s in need, but something about his expression attracted my attention.”

Smiley is a highly affectionate, sociable, and friendly dog who was content to stay at home with his family and play with his squeaky toys. But because they didn’t love him as much as he loved them, they chose to abandon him just because a new baby had been born.

Says Olena

“When I realized that no one had said that they could take it away, I broke down in tears. We can’t get a puppy right now, my husband stated after noticing that he was sobbing and reading the message.

Olena realized she had to assist him in some manner even if her husband had no interest in adopting him. Olena and her husband spoke with Pound Hounds Res-Q, a neighborhood organization that was intending to rescue the dog; the only thing standing in their way was the absence of a foster family, so they ultimately chose to provide them with their house.

Smiley was ultimately taken in by them after being castrated, but at first he was apprehensive.

Says Olena

He did not reply to any orders or his name, nor did he establish eye contact. He drank some water, showing signs of having been housebroken. He also understood not to climb on the bed or chew on anything other than his toys. He didn’t settle down or turn to face me, though, all day.
