The creature is known as Bon-Chan. He is 25 years old, and his wife gave it to him. He had been walking steadily at the elderly man’s side for twenty years, matching his plodding steps.

Twenty years ago, according to Mitani, Bon-Chan was no bigger than 10 cm. It was easily three feet tall when he held it in his palm.
