Dog Dumped For Being ‘Too Big’ Had No Idea What He Did Wrong

The dog had grown to be “too large.” When the dog’s owner surrendered him to a Georgia shelter last year, he stated that. The dog, a boxer named Mac, had spent nine years with his last owner, but that chapter of his life had come to an end.

Mac was a little overweight at the time, but not excessively so. However, Christina Wilson, a board member for Out of the Box Boxer Rescue, believes the owner was just unwilling to care for an old senior dog.

Wilson told The Dodo, “You hear things like this all the time.” “A lot of individuals abandon senior pets simply because they don’t want to care for them as they age.” It’s a tragic circumstance, but it occurs far more frequently than most people think.”

Mac was “large” when he was surrendered, but he dropped weight quickly in the shelter, most likely owing to stress.

“He had lost around 20 pounds in the two or three weeks he was there,” Wilson added. “Many dogs, especially older dogs, do not do well in shelters… Because it may be rather noisy and stressful, I believe he just did not eat much while he was there.”

Wilson and her husband had recently lost their own boxer, Levi, so when Wilson’s husband saw Mac’s picture on the DeKalb County Animal Services website, he was pulled to him right away.

“‘Oh my god, he reminds me of Levi,’ he said. “We have to find him,” Wilson declared.

Wilson and her husband made the decision to foster Mac until they could find him a permanent home, and they were optimistic about his chances. He turned out to be a sweet puppy that enjoyed nothing more than lying on the couch and receiving affection.

Wilson also like Mac’s facial expressions, which are constantly unhappy, regardless of his mood. “Whether he’s joyful or very enthusiastic or anything, he always has the same look,” Wilson added. “He just has this glum expression on his face, which is incredibly sweet.”

Wilson, on the other hand, was still concerned about Mac’s weight. He still hadn’t regained the weight he’d lost at the shelter, despite having a robust appetite. Mac, on the other hand, was given a clean bill of health following blood testing, urine tests, and an ultrasound.

However, there was another issue. Mac turned out to be a dog who disliked other dogs. Wilson took Mac to Virginia to meet a possible adoptive, but despite the other dog’s excitement to meet Mac, Mac didn’t get along with the family’s other dog. Unfortunately, the adoption did not go as planned.

“That’s when we decided, ‘OK, maybe he simply needs to be the lone dog,'” says the author. Wilson answered, ‘That’s the greatest thing for him.’

They found Mac a new foster home in Georgia with a man who didn’t have any other dogs, and he thrived.
